The statement is made, Jesus is so much better than the angels.  We have to ask ourselves why this was a necessary comparison and especially as an early starting point? The writer of Hebrews is persuading fellow Jews that Christ is the mediator of a better covenant than the angels giving the law of the Old Covenant to Moses.  To do this, he shows that Christ is better than the bearers and mediators of the Old Covenant.  This part 1 we discuss the writer's first point, that Jesus has by inheritance obtained a more excellent Name.

The wonder and fullness of our Lord Jesus Christ is presented in beautiful language just in these first three verses. Jesus is excellent as the heir and possessor of all things, the creator and sustainer of all things, the brightness and image of God, the all sufficient sacrifice for the purging of sins and the excellent exalted Lord of all authority and power.

This passage of Scripture digs deep into our motivation to love our brothers and sisters in Christ, even if our liberty of conscious needs to take a backseat. If you have a real love for them, you want to edify them and not bring them to a lack of peace within themselves before God or harm the furtherance of the gospel. Ultimately, the Kingdom is not about our liberty of conscious, but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost (14:17).

This is the first part of two where we examine the 7 excellencies that the writer of Hebrews presents in the first three verses.  Jesus Christ is presented in His person as the glorious Son of God.  Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the past and God's final Word in person who we put all our trust.

The wisest man on earth's memoir of his discoveries of what life has to offer 'under the sun'.  Ecclesiastes ultimately warns those who do not know Jesus Christ as their Savior and Life, that without Him, life is fleeting, frustrating, futile, ends in unavoidable death and if that were not bad enough, leaves no trace of your existence after a couple of generations.  With Christ, we do not view life as only 'under the sun', but we see it with a Christ-view, as 'above the sun'

Along with the previous charge in verses 1-6 for the stronger to not despise the weaker and the weaker to not judge the stronger - Paul brings in the ultimate objective for any actions of liberty or restriction and that is to bring Glory to God.  For Jesus is both Lord and Judge of all His servants.

What is to be our Christian behavior?  Since chapter 12 we've seen several charges as Christians to our obligations to God, our Church, to Governmental authority and now to each other.  The church in Rome had a mixed attendance of Jewish and Gentile believers.  Though they were untied in faith to Jesus Christ, Paul recognized some divisions when it came to disputable matters.  The concept of those who are weaker in the faith verses stronger in the faith surface as we deal with this subject.  Please join us as we continue to grow stronger in the Word of God!
